Willy Adames’ leadership helped provide one rookie with confidence

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames has been a leader of this team essentially since the day he arrived in May of 2021.  His spirit and energy is contagious, he is a great clubhouse guy, and he holds himself to a high standard both on and off the field.  On Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals a subtle on the field moment between him and rookie Abner Uribe helped give the young pitcher confidence to bounce back after a rocky start to the seventh inning.

Willy Adames helped provide Abner Uribe with confidence after a rocky start to the seventh inning during the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals game.

Abner Uribe was chosen to take the mound during a 5-3 ball game on Tuesday in which his Brewers were looking to hold onto a small lead over the Cardinals.  His outing began with a walk to Paul Goldschmidt and then a wild pitch that advanced him to second base.  Following this sequence of events Willy Adames had a talk with him in which after that he settled down, retired the next three batters, and did not allow a run to cross the plate.  The Brewers went on to win the game by a score of 7-3.

After the game Willy Adames discussed what he said in that moment as well as how impressed he has been with Abner Uribe.

“Sometimes it’s good for the guys to hear things from other players just to call things down and give them a break and to tell them to take a breather and calm things down.  Just to make quality pitches and he had too much energy so I just said ‘hey calm down man, calm down, you are better than that'”.

“He has surprised me with how he has handled himself.  He is acting like he has been here before and that he deserves to be here.  He’s been amazing the way he is handling himself on and off the field.  For me to see a young guy like him handle himself the way he is doing it, it’s an important thing.”

Since joining the Brewers big league squad in early July Abner Uribe has pitched to a 1.29 ERA over 28 innings pitched.  He additionally has accumulated 34 strikeouts, a 1.07 WHIP, eight holds, and one save.

Going forward, including in the playoffs, he should continue to be used in high leverage situations.  His electric arm is game changing and so far he has been a great contributor to Milwaukee’s bullpen and clubhouse.
