Watch: Top prospect Arjun Nimmala hit his first professional home run in Blue Jays Spring Training game
? Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

That’s one way to make a mark!

On Wednesday afternoon, Arjun Nimmala hit his first professional home run to tie the game at 9-9. It was a sweet, sweet swing that showcased just how much power the 18-year-old has. Unfortunately, there was no stat cast to track how hard he hit the ball, but it was an absolute rocket.

The 18-year-old shortstop was the Blue Jays first-round pick in 2023, as they selected him with the 20th-overall pick. Nimmala made his debut with the organization shortly after being drafted, and slashed .200/.500/.320 with a double and triple in 40 plate appearances. He showcased his great eye at the plate in his brief FCL tenure, walking 35% of the time as opposed to striking out 20% of the time.

Nimmala is a very exciting prospect to say the least. There’s a good chance he’ll stick at shortstop, as MLB Pipeline notes that he’s athletic enough to play there, but third base could be an option in the future.

Where he really excels though, is the power. MLB Pipeline grades the power tool at 55, tied with his arm for his highest grade. However, Fangraphs gave him a present value of 55 for raw power, as well as a future value of 70 as he fills out his frame. As for his game power, he’s currently at a 25 present value, but they gave him a 65 future value game power.

If there’s one flaw in Nimmala’s game, it would be his hit tool. Fangraphs grades him at a 20 present value and 40 future value, while MLB Pipeline gives him a 50 grade for the hit tool. Also mentioned in his bio is that his approach at the plate has improved since being drafted.

With all that being said, if Nimmala can reach his potential, he could be Toronto’s shortstop of the future, especially if he continues to fill out his frame.
