Unknown Red Sox Prospect Appears To Be Potential Stud After Breakthrough This Season

The Boston Red Sox may have found something with a young utility man. 

Boston's farm system has seen significant improvement over the last few years and although the club currently is in last place in the American League East at 33-34, certainly does have a bright future. There's plenty of reason for excitement with top prospect Marcelo Mayer being the club's biggest draw, but there are plenty of other prospects in the system who may have an impact at the big league level at some point.

One player who has impressed this season is little-known utility prospect Nick Sogard with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox. The 25-year-old was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft and was acquired by Boston ahead of the 2021 campaign. 

Sogard began his career in the Boston farm system with the High-A Greenville Drive in 2021 and was promoted to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs before the season came to a close. The utility man began the 2022 campaign with Portland and after not much time was promoted to Worcester. 

The 25-year-old has spent the entire 2023 campaign with Worcester so far this season and it has been without a doubt the best season of his young career to date. Sogard has been solid in the Red Sox's farm system and slashed .254/.359/.349 in 125 games in 2022 split between Portland and Worcester to go along with four home runs, 43 RBIs, and 18 steals. This season Sogard has taken a major step forward and is slashing .292/.398/.385 to go along with one home run, 21 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. 

To make matters even better for Sogard, he has bounced all around the field and has had success everywhere he's been. Sogard has seen time at second base, shortstop, third base, left field, and right field. 

Sogard may not be one of the club's more well-known prospects, but if he continues to hit the way he has at the Triple-A level while playing solid defense all over the diamond, he may find himself at Fenway Park in the not-so-distant future.
