The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Tony Gonsolin on the 15-day injured list and recalled Bryan Hudson from Triple-A Oklahoma City ahead of their doubleheader with the Miami Marlins.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated it is unlikely Gonsolin will return this season.

Gonsolin has been dealing with an elbow injury in his elbow for the past four to six weeks. He continued to pitch through it because the Dodgers didn’t believe it would risk further injury and felt he could still be effective.

“And from Tony, it’s he’s going out there and doing what he can,” Roberts said. “At times the stuff is good, the fastball is good. But physically, he’s not 100%.”

The decision to place him on the IL comes after Gonsolin gave up 10 earned runs on five home runs in 3.1 innings to the Miami Marlins on Saturday. After the game, Roberts and Gonsolin indicated an IL stint would be likely.

“But the other part is you still got to go out there and perform, even if you’re not 100%,” Roberts said after the game on Friday. “And to be willing to take the baseball, wanting to, and still not performing, then we as an organization got to make the decision.”

The 29-year-old revealed after the game on Friday that the injury affects his stuff more than his command, but he is still unsure what the exact issue is.

“I can’t explain it,” Gonsolin said. “I don’t know what it is exactly.”

Gonsolin has dealt with injury issues in the past, but it’s unclear if they’re related because the Dodgers and Gonsolin aren’t sure what the exact issue is.

“It probably is, and off the top of my head right now, I’m not specific on what the injury is to be quite honest,” Roberts said. “So what he’s been dealing with, I really don’t know. Because I’ve kind of been with him, of the mind where he’s going to pitch, he’s not going to hurt himself worse, and go take the baseball and get hitters out.”

The right-hander has thrown 103 innings this season with a 4.98 ERA, 82 strikeouts and 1.22 WHIP. He owns a career 3.19 ERA in 375.2 innings.

Bryan Hudson replaces Tony Gonsolin on Dodgers roster

Hudson is back for his third stint with the Dodgers, previously posting a 7.94 ERA in 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and a 1.76 WHIP this season.

The southpaw has given up runs in each of his three appearances, including three earned over two innings against the San Francisco Giants in his MLB debut on June 17.

Hudson has been far more effective at the Minor League level, pitching to a 2.76 ERA in 45.2 innings with 75 strikeouts. The 26-year-old is a combined 37-28 with a 4.23 ERA and 443 strikeouts in 502.2 career Minor League innings.
