Tigers broadcaster Jack Morris apologizes for making offensive comment before Shohei Ohtani at-bat

Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer and Bally Sports Detroit broadcaster Jack Morris apologized during the ninth inning of Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels for making an offensive comment earlier in the telecast.

In the sixth inning, Tigers pitcher Joe Jimenez struck out Juan Lagares with Shohei Ohtani set to hit next. Tigers play-by-play announcer Matt Shepard then asked Morris what the strategy should be against Ohtani.

Morris replied: "Be very, very careful," in an offensive tone that has often been used to mock English-speaking Asians.

With Ohtani returning to the plate in the ninth inning, Morris then issued an apology.

"It's been brought to my attention, and I sincerely apologize if I offended anybody, especially anybody in the Asian community, for what I said about pitching and being careful to Shohei Ohtani," Morris said. "I did not intend for any offensive thing and I apologize if I did. I certainly respect and have the utmost respect for this guy."

This isn't the first time Morris has made offensive comments, though. During his final season playing for the Tigers in 1990, the right-hander made a sexist comment to a female Detroit Free Press intern. As the intern approached Morris after a game to ask him a question in the clubhouse, he said: "I don't talk to people when I'm naked, especially women, unless they're on top of me or I'm on top of them."

The 66-year-old has since apologized for those comments.

Morris has been working as a television analyst since 2013 and has been covering the Tigers since 2015. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018 after a historic career that saw him win three World Series and a World Series MVP award.
