This Brewers-Yankees trade proposal sends two stars to N.Y. for six high prospects

Yankees receive: 

• RHP Corbin Burnes and SS Willy Adames

Brewers receive:

• One of SS Oswald Peraza or OF Everson Pereira
• Two of RHP Drew Thorpe, RHP Chase Hampton, and RHP Will Warren
• All of SS Keiner Delgado, LHP Henry Lalane and SS Roderick Arias

Headlining this six prospect package is either Peraza or Pereira. Both have limited MLB experience — Peraza has appeared in 70 games over the past two years and Pereira just 27 this year. Peraza is out of minor league options and has not found success at the plate in the big leagues (68 career OPS+), and  Pereira struck out 40 times in 93 at-bats this year.

In the pitching tier of this trade package is a trio of right-handed pitching prospects that has the Yankees parting ways with two of them. Starting pitcher Thrope is New York’s fifth-ranked prospect, was a second-round draft selection in 2022 and has an incredible changeup.

Hampton, also a starting pitcher, is the fourth-ranked prospect who was selected in the sixth round in the 2022 draft. He struck out 145 batters in 106 innings pitched across the High-A and Double-A levels this year. Lastly there is Warren. He is the Yankees' 10th-ranked prospect, but of the other starting pitchers mentioned, he is the closest to MLB-ready.

The last row of players mentioned in the trade package were Florida Complex League players Delgado, Lalane and Arias. Arias was their top International Signee in 2022 at $4M. All are just 19 years old and need to develop.

Overall, this is a lot of players to give up for one year of both Burnes and Adames. However, both of the MLB players mentioned have not had success and the strength of this package is based on Milwaukee receiving two top pitching prospects and their top 2022 international signee.

The flaw with this proposal is that the MLB players involved have not had success. The Brewers aren't looking to rebuild their farm system. They want to remain competitive by adding controllable pieces to their already-young roster. This trade proposal would be more appealing if better-quality immediately impactful MLB players were involved.
