Stephen A. Smith 'very concerned' Mets will sign Yankees' Aaron Judge this offseason

New York Yankees All-Star slugger Aaron Judge looks like one of the smartest men in all of MLB for rejecting a seven-year, $213.5 million contract extension offer before the season and betting on himself.

Per ESPN stats, Judge would be set to hit free agency as the reigning American League Triple Crown winner if the campaign ended today, and the 30-year-old is one home run shy of tying the all-time AL record for most homers hit in a single season of 61 set by Yankees legend Roger Maris in 1961. Noted MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently linked Judge with none other than the New York Mets, and outspoken Yankees fan and ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith admitted during Wednesday's edition of "First Take" that he's "very concerned" big-spending Mets owner Steve Cohen could make a move for Judge during the upcoming offseason.

"The fact that the Yankees didn't get that brother signed, I think Steve Cohen, the new owner, the modern-day (George) Steinbrenner, if we're gonna put it bluntly...I think this man is throwing a smokescreen on everything," Smith explained. "I think that he is planning on breaking the bank for Aaron Judge. I think Aaron Judge knows it. And as a result, unless the New York Yankees are willing to do it -- which they clearly were not this past offseason, only offered him about $240 million (including arbitration) -- I think that Cohen's going to one-up that by $100 million.

"I think Aaron Judge is going to get a $350 million deal, minimum, from Cohen."

Ronald Blum of the Associated Press pointed out earlier this week that the Mets were on pace to have MLB's highest payroll of $273.9 million for 2022. The first-place Mets began Wednesday at 95-55 and holding a slight one-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.
