Sonny Gray Reveals Arizona Diamondbacks Were Finalist in Offseason Pursuit
Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports

During an appearance on the “Foul Territory” podcast, three-time All-Star Sonny Gray disclosed that the Arizona Diamondbacks were one of the finalists considered as a potential landing spot for him this offseason.

Ultimately, Gray opted for a 3-year, $75 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, finalizing the deal on November 27th. This move prompted the D-backs to pursue Eduardo Rodriguez, whom they acquired two weeks later.

In the previous season, Sonny Gray clinched the second spot in the Cy Young voting, following Gerrit Cole. His tenure with the Twins saw him boasting a remarkable 2.79 ERA. Notably, in April, Gray yielded just 3 earned runs across 35 innings of play.

Gray also hinted at the Cincinnati Reds as another potential destination he had considered during the offseason. He had previously spent three seasons with the Reds before joining the Minnesota Twins in 2022.

At 35 years old, Gray’s status for opening day remains uncertain due to a right hamstring strain sustained during spring training.

Given this information, it prompts consideration: Should the Diamondbacks have pursued Sonny Gray more vigorously instead of Eduardo Rodriguez?
