Red Sox exercise option on manager Alex Cora for 2023, 2024 seasons

After bringing the Boston Red Sox to within six wins of yet another World Series title, manager Alex Cora is officially sticking around to lead the club for at least three more years.

The former MLB infielder made his managerial debut with the Red Sox in 2018, leading them to a 108-54 record in the regular season and their fourth championship of the millennium. The team regressed to 84-78 in 2019 before the 46-year-old was implicated in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal and Cora and the Red Sox mutually agreed to part ways prior to the 2020 season.

After serving a one-year suspension in 2020 -- in which Boston struggled to a 24-36 record under Ron Roenicke -- Cora signed a two-year deal with a two-year option to return to the team in 2021. The team finished the season at 92-70 and in second place in the AL East behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

Boston dropped the rival-New York Yankees 6-2 in the AL Wild Card game and defeated Tampa Bay in four games in the ALDS. Despite holding a 2-1 series advantage over the Houston Astros heading into Game 4 of the ALCS, Houston came back to win in six games.

Cora has a 284-202 career managerial mark and has gone 17-8 in the playoffs.
