Red Sox DFA Jeurys Familia after meltdown vs. Yankees
Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports

Boston Red Sox reliever Jeurys Familia gave up three runs to the New York Yankees in the 10th inning Tuesday night and was promptly designated for assignment after the meltdown was over.

The Red Sox dropped a 7-6 decision and Familia lost his roster spot, one month to the day after he was added to Boston's roster.

His roster spot will go to infielder Yu Chang on Wednesday, MassLive.com reported.

Familia entered the tied game and issued a walk to Aaron Hicks before inducing Marwin Gonzalez to hit into a double play. With automatic runner Isiah Kiner-Falefa on third, Familia walked Aaron Judge intentionally and then walked Giancarlo Stanton to load the bases. Gleyber Torres then cleared the bases with a double.

Familia, 32, posted a 1-2 record with a 6.10 ERA in 10 relief appearances with the Red Sox.

"I'm going to have to take some time off and rest a little bit and then get back to work so I can be ready for next year," Familia said postgame through an interpreter.

The Red Sox responded with two runs in the bottom of the 10th.
