Pittsburgh Pirates Agree to Minor League Deal with Veteran Right-Hander
USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a minor league deal with veteran right-hander Wily Peralta, who most recently had a solid run with the Detroit Tigers.

Per Robert Murray of Fansided:

Right-hander Wily Peralta has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates, source said. Peralta, who recently posted a 2.93 ERA in two seasons with the Detroit Tigers, gets an invite to spring training.

The 34-year-old is a 10-year major league veteran with the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals and Tigers. He has been both a starter and a reliever in his career, making 120 starts for the Brewers and then making 18 more for Detroit in 2021. In 2022, he was a reliever and turned in a stellar year, going 2-0 with a 2.58 ERA over 38.1 innings.

In 2023, he spent the entirety of the season pitching for the Washington Nationals' minor league affiliate.

Lifetime, he's 56-61 with a 4.29 ERA. There's no telling exactly what his role with the Pirates organization will be but we know that the Pirates have designs on remaining competitive for the entire season.

In an effort to do that, they've acquired multiple veteran starting pitchers, including Martin Perez and Marco Gonzales. They will pair them with ace Mitch Keller. There's also No. 1 pick in the draft Paul Skenes, who is expected to debut at some point in 2024.

The Pirates finished in fourth in the National League Central a season ago, just ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals, who were in last.
