Phillies place Jose Alvarado on 15-Day Injured List
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Phillies have announced that they have placed star left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado on the 15-Day Injured List.

Jose Alvarado has been one of the best relief pitchers in baseball this season. In 14 games he has pitched to a 1.88 earned run average and has struck out 24 batters. Even more impressive, he has yet to walk an opposing batter.

Jose Alvarado Injury Details

Alvarado had been dealing with some wrist soreness on his pitching hand. The team has been closely monitoring the situation and have been cautious with Jose. He was held out from last night’s game and the move this morning makes sense after the news surrounding the injury.

However, with the news from today, it appears that there could be worse news on the horizon. Jose’s left elbow is inflamed and the team will conduct MRIs to determine what is happening. This could be a wide range of injuries or just basic inflammation. With a pitcher’s elbow, you never want to speculate.
The Phillies need a healthy Jose if they are to compete again this year. Hoping to hear good news out of South Philly soon.

In a corresponding move, the team has recalled right-hander Andrew Bellatti from his rehab assignment in the minor leagues. Bellatti started the season hot and was injured after apparent over usage. He dealt with right forearm tendinitis and has looked solid in his limited return action. He returns to fill Jose’s spot in the bullpen for the time being.

The decision to place Jose Alvarado has been retroactively Moved to 5/8, meaning he is eligible to return on May 23rd. Hopefully, the injury is minor and doesn’t become an issue for the team or Alvarado for the remainder of the season.
