Phillies acquire Jose Alvarado from Rays in three-team trade

The Philadelphia Phillies have made their first move of the Dave Dombrowski era.

Philadelphia acquired left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team deal that sent Garrett Cleavinger to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rays received infielder Dillon Paulson and a player to be named later from the Dodgers.

Alvarado made just nine relief appearances in 2020 due to injury. However, the 25-year-old owns a career 3.46 ERA with 161 strikeouts in 132.2 innings.

The Alvarado trade comes two days after the Rays traded ace Blake Snell to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Francisco Mejia, Luis Patino and Cole Wilcox.
