New MLB rules allow discipline for electronic sign stealing

Major League Baseball players who steal signs now will face discipline from the league.

According to ESPN's Marly Rivera, MLB and the MLBPA have agreed to a new set of rules that will punish players and personnel who steal signs electronically.

The rules state that any individual who uses electronic devices or visual-enhancement devices during games to identify, communicate or relay pitch information will be disciplined. Consequences may include suspension without pay, fines or loss of benefits.

No team is allowed to install or use any camera that captures an image of the catcher's signs during a game. Players and team personnel can use video before games to identify an opponents' signs or pitch information.

These new rules likely are a result of the Houston Astros cheating their way to a 2017 World Series title. No Astros players were disciplined after MLB's investigation in January concluded the team used an elaborate scheme to steal signs.

Beginning on Saturday, monitors and TV's in the clubhouse can only show a single video angle of the field to track game action, according to Rivera, and it can't display any catcher signs or pitch information.
