Miami Marlins Could Look To Make Blockbuster Pitching Trades
Robert Edwards-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins have been one of the worst teams in baseball during the 2024 season. Despite only entering the second week of May, the franchise has already accepted the harsh fate of being sellers.

The first big trade of the season was completed last week when the Miami Marlins sent All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres in exchange for four players. That was the first of what could potentially be several deals Miami makes ahead of the trade deadline this summer.

One player that could be on the move is starting pitcher Trevor Rogers. Over at Just Baseball, Rogers made the list compiled by Tim Kelly of the top 10 candidates to be traded ahead of the 2024 deadline.

Only 26 years old and under team control through 2026, there is certainly some appeal to Rogers. We have seen just how good he can be, as he was an All-Star in 2021 while finishing runner-up to Jonathan India for Rookie of the Year.

A biceps strain in 2023 limited Rogers to only 18 innings last season. That makes him a risky target for playoff teams who are hoping to be playing deep into October. But, a fringe playoff team that still has an eye toward the future could be a nice fit for the former first-round pick.

Rogers isn’t the only Miami Marlins pitcher to land on this list. While he came in at No. 9, coming in at No. 7 is Jesus Lezardo. On the injured list with left elbow tightness, his market will depend on how healthy he is later in the summer.

In five starts thus far this season, Luzardo has struggled. He has gone 0-2 with a 6.58 ERA. The elbow issue could have contributed to that, as we have seen him perform at a high level previously.

Also under team control through 2026, there won’t be a rush to move Luzardo. Unless the Miami Marlins are blown away by an offer in what could be a weak pitching market, they can wait things out.

Arraez was No. 1 on Kelly’s list before he was dealt. The highest-ranked player remaining is now Houston Astros third baseman, Alex Bregman.
