Mets Owner Comments On Bobby Bonilla Day

It’s July 1.

That means it’s a very special day in baseball history, especially for the New York Mets.

This infamous holiday marks the annual installment of a $1 million-plus payment that the Mets have to give Bonilla.

Essentially, the Mets have to pay him a sum of money every July 1, at least up until 2035.

There are 13 years left of this and there have been no discussions whatsoever to buy him out early.

But that’s not a problem for Mets owner Steve Cohen, who took to Twitter this morning to wish everybody in Mets country a Happy Bobby Bonilla Day.

Steve Cohen: Trolling Master

Cohen is a dream owner.

He’s funny and he’s totally trolling Bonilla.

It’s a payment he can afford to make.

But it’s funny to see him talk about the annual holiday and still roast Bonilla essentially.

Cohen is doing a great job of keeping things light.

But since it’s a payment he can afford and handle, it has to feel good for Mets fans to know that even with this annual payment, Cohen still has the financial flexibility to go out and make big moves to improve the Mets roster.

No wonder it’s Cohen’s favorite day of the year.

Can you blame him?

It’s almost as if Cohen has Bonilla under his thumb in a way.

He kind of does, honestly.

But for all the people roasting the Mets for this infamous holiday, and the fact that it’s going to be another 13 years before it’s finally over and the Mets don’t have to pay him anymore, Cohen is basking in the glory of it and having fun with Bonilla in the process.
