Max Scherzer surpassed Cy Young for 22nd on the MLB’s all-time strikeout list. The Washington Nationals ace struck out 10 Arizona Diamondbacks’ batters Friday night.

Following the Nats 1-0 win, manager Davey Martinez shared Scherzer’s perfect reaction when he informed the right-hander he passed Cy Young.

“It’s a wow. It’s awesome, I told him ‘Congratulations’ when he came out and he kind of looked at me and I said, ‘Yeah you just passed Cy Young,'” Martinez said per Jessica Camerato of MLB.com

“Yeah I have three of those on my wall,” a focus and determined Scherzer downplayed the moment responding to Martinez.

Befuddled, Martinez could only respond by saying “Congratulations” again.

For many others, passing the famed Cy Young is an accomplishment in itself. But for Scherzer it’s just a bookmark on an already destined Hall of Fame career.

Max Scherzer has three Cy Young awards, winning one in the American League earlier in his career with the Detroit Tigers. He has added two National League Cy Youngs on his mantle while with the Nationals, most recently in 2017.

He also is a World Series champion and three-time National League strikeout leader. In all moving up the strikeout list is just an add-on. So forgive Scherzer for the nonchalant reaction to the feat of passing Cy Young.
