When the Los Angeles Dodgers made a somewhat surprising decision to trade Caleb Ferguson to New York Yankees just before Spring Training began, they acquired another left-handed reliever in Matt Gage along with prospect Christian Zazueta Jr.

Gage appeared in four Cactus League games and started the 2024 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City. However, he was released earlier this week as a corresponding move to the Dodgers claiming Taylor Trammell off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

Gage was on the Oklahoma City Baseball Club’s seven-day injured list at the time of being released.

His time away from the Dodgers organization was short-lived, as Gage re-signed on a Minor League contract, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post:

While Gage is back with the Dodgers organization, he no longer is on their 40-man roster. That is of benefit for the present as they needed room for Trammell, but if Gage is needed at the Major League level, the Dodgers will first need to make room to get him back on the 40-man roster.

For the time being, the 31-year-old figures to rejoin Oklahoma City.

Matt Gage’s stats

Gage appeared in five games for the Houston Astros last season, collecting eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. He has been in the Majors for parts of two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (2022) and Astros (2023), allowing a combined four runs in 19.2 innings for a 1.83 ERA with 20 strikeouts.

In nine Minor League seasons, Gage is 47-44 with a 4.22 ERA with 663 strikeouts in 777 innings. Gage was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB Draft.
