Giants injury updates: Mitch Haniger, Mike Yastrzemski, more
USA TODAY Sports

The SF Giants released an update on the status of several injured players on Friday. With the Giants barely holding onto playoff position amidst an ugly skid, manager Gabe Kapler could use all the reinforcements he can get. It seems like some of the team's most proven bats are especially close to returning to the lineup.

Outfielder Mike Yastrzemski has traveled to Arizona to continue rehabbing over the weekend. He landed on the injured list with a hamstring injury for the third time this season earlier this month. When healthy, Yastrzemski has been one of the Giants' best players this season. In 285 plate appearances, Yaz has hit .233/.314/.439 triple-slash with 17 doubles, a triple, and 11 home runs. Given how often Yastrzemski has had the same recurring issue, the team's training staff will likely be exceptionally cautious.

Power-hitting outfielder Mitch Haniger is in the final stages of his rehab and is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday. Haniger has been out since he suffered a fractured forearm in June, although Kapler recently revealed that a back issue had actually stalled his rehab more recently. Haniger is in the first season of a three-year, $43.5 million contract he signed with the Giants last offseason. He has a .230/.281/.372 triple-slash in 160 plate appearances this season, but is a career .259/.332/.469 hitter.

John Brebbia threw another bullpen on Thursday. Like Yaz, he has traveled to Arizona to throw his first live bullpen since he went on the injured list. Brebbia is expected to make a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the big-league roster. Brebbia has been out since mid-June with a Grade 2 lat strain. Prior to the injury, Brebbia recorded a 3.14 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 10 walks in 28.2 innings pitched (29 appearances).

The third outfielder on the injured list, A.J. Pollock, has also traveled to Arizona to start baseball activity. Pollock, who was acquired at the trade deadline from the Seattle Mariners, landed on the injured list earlier this month after suffering a left oblique strain. Pollock has only appeared in five games with the Giants, but on the season, he is hitting .165/.215/.308 with five home runs in 144 plate appearances.
