Giants announcer thinks Buster Posey wants to shape franchise

The SF Giants are likely to have a loud participating voice in Buster Posey going forward, according to team broadcaster Dave Flemming. On Tim Kawakami's podcast, The TK Show, earlier this week, Flemming shared that he believes Posey wants to be very involved with the franchise. While Posey became an owner of the team last year, he has publicly downplayed his interest in being involved more than any other investor. Flemming seemed to suggest something else entirely.

"The voice is loud, I think, and it's gonna be loud," Flemming said. "I think he wants it to be involved, I think he wants [the Giants] to be a big part of his life. I think he really wants to be a big part of the Giants franchise and be a part of those big decisions."

The Posey family moved back to Georgia after his retirement in 2021. However, they have recently moved back to the Bay Area. There has been a lot of speculation as to why, but the general consensus is that the family simply missed being out west. And the franchise, in addition to its fans, has seemingly missed their presence as well.

Giants fans have, over the course of what many, including Flemming, would call a disappointing 2023 season, begun to turn mutinous. Under President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi's tenure and with manager Gabe Kapler at the helm, many have become restless in ways that they feel will only be resolved with someone from the Giants' dynastic era from 2010-2014.

With Buster Posey a new part-owner of the franchise, those same fans think they've found a silver bullet solution: simply oust Zaidi for Posey. But is that what the highly-accoladed Posey wants? Flemming is not so sure. 

"I don't know that he wants to be the day-to-day decision maker on the baseball side. In fact, my guess is he doesn't want to do that. I think he wants to... you know, be there with Greg Johnson and Rob Dean and Larry [Baer] and all the people who are separated from baseball ops but also have a big role in shaping the franchise. I think he wants to be right in that mix."

Not exactly the everyday decision maker role many fans are hoping for. But after a season that has quickly soured right at the very end, with the SF Giants coming up under .500 for the first time since June, even a strong voice in decision-making rooms from a legend like Buster Posey might be welcome.
