Genesis Cabrera’s suspension reduced to two games following appeal
Jonathan Dyer-USA TODAY Sports

The Toronto Blue Jays will be without left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera for the next two games.

The team announced ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros that Cabrera will be suspended for two games for his role in a benches-clearing altercation between the Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend.

Cabrera was originally suspended for three games but he appealed the ruling and it was reduced to two games. He’ll begin serving the suspension immediately and will be able to return to play when the Blue Jays kick off a three-game series with the New York Yankees on Friday.

The incident happened during Toronto’s 5-1 loss in Tampa on Saturday. Cabrera came in to pitch for the Blue Jays in the seventh inning and got into a shoving match with Jose Caballero after he ran from first to third base on a bunt attempt that was thrown into the outfield. After the game, Cabrera said through the team’s interpreter: “It was more the heat of the moment. I think I kind of overreacted a little bit. He looked at me and I just reacted.”

While appealing the suspension, Cabrera was still able to pitch for the Blue Jays. He didn’t appear in Sunday’s win in Tampa but pitched one inning in Monday’s 10-0 loss to the Astros. The lefty allowed three earned runs on two hits and one walk and struck out two batters. Through two innings pitched this season, Cabrera has allowed four earned runs.

The Blue Jays acquired Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals last season in exchange for prospect Sammy Hernandez after the lefty was designated for assignment. He made 29 appearances for the Blue Jays in 2023 and posted a 2.66 ERA, a significant improvement from the 5.06 ERA he had with the Cardinals before the move.
