Ex-Red Sox Catcher Reportedly Lands With Padres On Minor League Deal
Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports

One former member of the Boston Red Sox is attempting to work his way back up to the big leagues.

Former Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki has bounced around since leaving the club in 2022 and now reportedly has found a new home with the San Diego Padres, according to Metsmerized Online's Mike Mayer.

"Catcher Kevin Plawecki has signed a minor league deal with the Padres," Mayer said.

Plawecki didn't appear in a big league game in 2023 but spent time in the Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, and Padres organizations. He began the season with Washington and appeared in 24 games with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings and slashed .256/.351/.342 with one home run and six RBIs.

The 32-year-old opted out of his contract with the Nationals and signed with the Padres and appeared in 33 games with the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas and slashed .276/.333/.439 with three home runs and 21 RBIs. San Diego traded Plawecki to the Texas Rangers and he played 10 games with the Triple-A Round Rock Express but was released.

Plawecki now will attempt to make his way back to the big leagues in the San Diego organization in 2024. San Diego currently has Luis Campusano, Kyle Higashioka, and Brett Sullivan on the roster.

The Padres had slugger Gary Sanchez last season but he is a free agent and could end up signing elsewhere. It's unclear what role Plawecki will play, but if he can shine in the minors maybe he could make his way back up to the big leagues again.
