Diamondbacks recall Justin Martinez, option Luis Frías to Triple-A Reno
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

In preparation for a critical four-game series against the Padres starting on Thursday, the Diamondbacks have shuffled around their bullpen by recalling Justin Martinez and optioning Luis Frias to Triple-A Reno.

This marks Justin’s second stint with the Diamondbacks in his Major League career, the most recent being in early July.

Unfortunately, this two-week period in July did not bode well for Martinez. In the span of four appearances, the 22-year-old allowed 7 earned runs in a mere 3.1 innings of work.

This notably includes a dismal performance against the Reds on July 21st, during which Martinez surrendered five runs after recording just a single out. The Diamondbacks ultimately fell 9-6 in this game, leading to Justin being sent to the minors.

Conversely, Luis Frias has shown significant improvement over the past month and a half while with the Diamondbacks.

Excluding the three earned runs conceded against the Rockies on Tuesday, Frias has embarked on an impressive streak of 10 consecutive outings without allowing a single run.

Since reuniting with the Diamondbacks on July 21st, Frias has logged 9.1 innings on the mound, with the only blemish being the three earned runs he allowed on Tuesday.

However, Luis has encountered some command issues in his recent three outings. Registering four walks over his last 2 innings of work is likely the contributing factor behind his demotion to Triple-A

The first pitch for the Diamondbacks’ series opener against the Padres is scheduled for 6:40 PM.
