Diamondbacks call up former 1st-round pick Bryce Jarvis

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a series of roster moves, including the decision to bring up former 1st-round draft pick Bryce Jarvis.

With SP Ryne Nelson joining the Reno Aces down in Triple-A, Jarvis will provide extra depth in the Diamondbacks bullpen while they deal with a couple of injuries in their starting rotation.

Bryce Jarvis was drafted by the Diamondbacks 18th overall in the 2020 draft. Since then, the 25-year-old has worked his way up through the ranks.

During this season in AAA, Bryce faced considerable challenges as a starting pitcher. His performance with the Reno Aces yielded a 5.48 ERA, and he surrendered 90 hits over the course of 88 innings of work.

Because of this, Jarvis made a transition into a reliever role around mid-July. Over the past month, his progress has been remarkable, securing three wins with an impressive 3.10 ERA and holding opposing batters to a mere .197 average.

While the Diamondbacks will continue to use Bryce as a reliever, they still need to figure out what to do with their starting rotation. Amidst Merrill Kelly’s day-to-day status, plus Zach Davies and Tommy Henry being on the IL, the team currently boasts only Zac Gallen and Brandon Pfaadt as their only starting pitchers.

Regarding Ryne Nelson, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has openly acknowledged his anticipation of the rookie’s return to the major leagues sometime in the near future.

“I know he’s disappointed, but at the end of the day, we highlighted some things that had to improve for him to come back here and be excellent.”
