Danny Mendick Gets the Call as White Sox Seek Offensive Spark

The Chicago White Sox announced Monday that they've selected the contract of Triple-A Charlotte infielder Danny Mendick. Mendick returned to the organization on a minor-league deal in the offseason. He appeared in parts of four seasons with the South Siders from 2019 to 2022. A Sox' 22nd-round draft pick in 2015, Mendick will join the team in Minnesota.

The 30-year-old has been on a tear for the Charlotte Knights, homering in five consecutive games. After Mendick's poor Cactus League performance, the White Sox assigned him to Triple-A, instead choosing infielder Braden Shewmake for the Opening Day roster.

Mendick signed a one-year deal with the New York Mets in 2023 but slashed a paltry .185/.232/.277 in 33 games. He put together a nice run in 2022 before a collision with outfielder Adam Haseley resulted in a torn ACL, ending his season.

The White Sox returned infielder Lenyn Sosa to Triple-A Charlotte in an accompanying move to add Mendick to the active roster. Since his call-up, Sosa produced just two hits and a walk in 40 plate appearances.

To make room for Mendick on the 40-man roster, Chicago designated infielder Zach Remillard for assignment. Remillard finally broke into the big leagues in 2023 after Chicago selected him in the 10th round of the 2016 draft.

John Brebbia Returns

Also among Monday's roster moves, the White Sox reinstated reliever John Brebbia from the 15-day injured list and returned him from his rehab assignment. The right-hander appeared in four games for the White Sox before a recurring calf injury flared up on April 5.

To make room for Brebbia, Chicago optioned rookie starter Nick Nastrini to Charlotte. The 24-year-old had a decent MLB debut on April 15 before a rough outing in Sunday's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies.
