Cy Young winner finally receives contract offer
Blake Snell. Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Blake Snell’s free-agent market continues to move slowly, but the reigning NL Cy Young winner reportedly has an offer on the table. There is, however, a caveat.

The New York Yankees have made Snell an initial contract offer, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Terms of the offer were not available, but there is said to be a “big gap” between what the Yankees are offering and what Snell has been asking for.

Heyman notes that the Yankees may bank on Snell taking less money to pitch for a contender. They view their competition as the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels, making them the best landing spot from a competitive standpoint. However, the finances may be an issue no matter what, and there is always the risk of another team entering the mix.

Previous reports did indicate that Snell was interested in playing for the Yankees. Whether that happens or not may come down to how much he is willing to compromise on his asking price. That might be tough for him to do coming off a season that saw him post a 2.25 ERA in 32 starts.
