Cubs pitcher Keegan Thompson suspended three games for throwing at Andrew McCutchen

Chicago Cubs pitcher Keegan Thompson will serve a three-game suspension for hitting the Milwaukee Brewers' Andrew McCutchen on Saturday, MLB announced Monday.

Earlier in the Cubs' 9-0 win on Saturday, Chicago's Ian Happ and Willson Contreras were both hit by pitches. Thompson hit McCutchen in the eighth inning, causing both benches to clear.

Thompson, 27, appeared in 32 games last season and started five, finishing the season with a 3-3 record and 3.38 ERA. The 2.2 innings he pitched Saturday against the Brewers were his only appearance in the Cubs' first series of the season. Thompson struck out four and allowed no hits against Milwaukee.

In addition to Thompson's suspension, MLB also suspended Cubs manager David Ross for one game, which is automatic when a player is curbed for hitting a player intentionally.

The 2-1 Cubs will next travel to play two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates followed by a four-game series on the road against the Colorado Rockies.
