Cubs Claim Catcher Brian Serven Off Waivers From Rockies
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs did it, they FINALLY made a major-league move. However, it is far from what fans were hoping for. After whispers of big-time pitchers, like Shota Imanaga , and a reunion with Cody Bellinger, the fanbase will have to settle for a catcher as the team's first 40-man roster move.

Per the Cubs , the team has claimed catcher Brian Serven off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. Serven has spent majority of his career in the minors but has appeared in 73 MLB games. With the claim, the Cubs' 40-man roster stands at 38.

The backstop has slashed .195/.248/.314 in the majors with six home runs and 17 RBIs. However, majority of his meaningful stats came in 2022 after only appearing in 17 games during 2023.

In reality, Serven is nothing more than depth for the Cubs this season. The team already added to the catching cupboard by inking veteran catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor-league deal in December. The Cubs have stashed plenty of depth in case one of either Yan Gomes or Miguel Amaya misses significant time in 2024.

Serven had some success in the minors, with his best season coming back in 2021. He got off to a hot start in 2022, which led to his promotion to the majors. The 27-year-old is a nice depth piece moving forward.
