Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff sets franchise record against Cardinals

Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff has been excellent since being activated off the IL at the end of June. Prior to his start on Sept. 8 against the Cardinals, he had made 16 starts over that time frame, covered 97.2 innings and had a 2.49 ERA. He also has been racking up the strikeouts. Against the Cardinals, he reached 10 strikeouts for the fourth consecutive game. This is the longest stretch in Brewers franchise history.

Woodruff’s streak started on Sept. 11 against the Reds. In that game, he pitched six innings and struck out 11 batters. On Sept. 17 against the Yankees he fanned 10 over eight innings. Then again against the Reds on Sept. 22 he struck out 11. His double-digit strikeout performance against the Cardinals is what put him in the history books.

Two other Brewers previously had streaks of three games with at least 10 strikeouts. Corbin Burnes accomplished this earlier in 2022 in games spanning from April 19-May 1. Yovani Gallardo also did this during the 2011 season.

The ability to consecutively strike out at least 10 batters in a game is no easy task. That being said, Woodruff has a knack for coming up with big performances when the Brewers need him to deliver. The fact that he is pitching this well down the stretch while the Brewers are in the midst of a playoff race is another example of this.

With seven games remaining, Woodruff will get one more start during the 2022 regular season. Hopefully he can extend his streak to five consecutive games with at least 10 strikeouts.
