Brett Sullivan Showcased Importance of Depth in Padres' Wednesday Win

Brett Sullivan would not even be on the San Diego Padres' roster right now if it wasn't for Luis Campusano suffering a thumb sprain. Prior to this, seven straight seasons saw Sullivan making a name himself in the minor leagues and patiently waiting for his name to be called.

Well it finally did a few weeks ago and he has slowly been on the rise since then. San Diego's 7-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds came in large part thanks to his elite production. He was able to garner two hits with one of them being his first major league home run.

A big double in the second inning also gave him a total of four RBI's on the night and, like I said, he provided momentum for the group to win in dominant fashion.

When asked about his performance in his postgame media session, the 29-year-old catcher assured that he was just happy to contribute in any way possible.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Sullivan said. “Just to be able to get those RBIs for the boys early, take the lead, that’s what probably felt the best. Then seeing the ball get out was a dream come true. I definitely heard the fans. I tried to soak it in as much as I could, but I kind of blacked out a little bit."

It is important to remember that Manny Machado sat out this game and both Fernando Tatis Jr and Xander Bogaerts did not record a hit themselves while Juan Soto only had one.

Despite how talented all of these guys are, it is super important to always have other options down the line to fall back on when the big names are not producing. The Friars are about to enter a huge series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and they will need all the offensive firepower they can get.

Someone like Sullivan, who hasn't even been on the roster for long, making an immediate impact is something that will take San Diego very far.
