The Boston Red Sox have released controversial left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody.
Dermody was signed this offseason and appeared in Triple-A for the Worcester Red Sox, but was called up earlier in June to start against the Cleveland Guardians.
This became a national story when it was revealed to the public that Dermody had homophobic tweets in his past.
The Red Sox knew about the tweets and addressed them with Dermody in the spring, but they resurfaced upon being called up. Dermody's one start was met with plenty of controversy and conversation and he was designated for assignment and sent back to Triple-A after that start.
This week, Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom said that the team uncovered more offensive posts from Dermody in the past.
This excerpt comes from the Boston Globe via CBS Sports:
"We pride ourselves on doing the right due diligence so that we can have the right conversations around these things," Bloom told the Boston Globe. "We realized as this was unfolding [after the callup] that a process that is normally pretty robust missed some things. There were other concerning things on social media. We usually don't miss these types of things. In this case we did."
Against the Guardians, he lasted four innings and took the loss. He'll end his Red Sox tenure at 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA.
For his career, the 32-year-old is 2-1 with a 5.74 ERA. He's also appeared in the majors for the Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays.
The Red Sox open a series with the Yankees on Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
