Astros' Yuli Gurriel had emotional reaction to being taken off WS roster following Game 5 injury

On Saturday, the Houston Astros announced that first baseman Yuli Gurriel would miss the remainder of the World Series after suffering a knee injury in Game 5. 

It's a devastating break for Gurriel, who, according to manager Dusty Baker, "tried everything" to play. Baker said Gurriel had treatment on Friday and again on Saturday, but the injury didn't respond well enough for him to be ready for action in Game 6 or a possible Game 7. 

"He wasn't crying, but he had tears in his eyes," Baker said. "You can tell how badly that he wanted to play. He just couldn't do it. And we had to replace him." 

On Friday, Gurriel posted an encouraging Tweet about his status, saying the Astros' win in Game 5 made his knee feel better "fast." Ultimately, however, the Astros opted to replace his spot with catcher Korey Lee, which according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart, will allow Houston to start backup catcher Christian Vazquez at DH. 

Gurriel batted .347/.360/.490 with two home runs and four RBI in the postseason. He finished 6-for-19 with a double and an RBI during the World Series. 

The 38-year-old has spent his entire seven-year MLB career in Houston, but his untimely injury may spell the end of his time with the Astros. 

A free agent at the end of the season, the Astros may choose to let Gurriel walk after a lackluster 2022. In 146 games, Gurriel batted .242/.288/.360 with eight home runs and 53 RBI.
