An early subplot of the Cleveland Guardians season has been the number of injuries the team has seen to the pitching staff. Specifically to the starting rotation.

The club learned just days before the 2023 season got underway that Triston McKenzie would miss up to two months with an injury. Then, Aaron Civale followed him after making just two starts. Civale actually looked solid in his appearances too.

With both of those injuries and Zach Plesac underperforming, Peyton Battenfield suddenly found himself in the starting five. Battenfield has made five starts and has shown flashes of potential in them despite a 0-5 record.

His full stats include an ERA of 5.19, and a WHIP of 1.327 in 34.2 innings pitched.

However, Battenfield is now headed to the injured list with shoulder inflammation. This is the same injury that caused Sam Hentges to miss the first six weeks of the season.

In the wake of this injury, Cleveland has recalled Tim Herrin from Triple-A to have in the bullpen.

This means that the Guardians will need a starter for Monday's game against the White Sox. Right now the likely candidates are either Zach Plesac or another high prospect Gavin Williams
