Alex Bregman considers himself an old-school player who appreciates some of baseball’s unwritten rules, but it will be interesting to see if batters getting hit by pitches as retaliation remains one of his favorites.

Bregman was a guest on the “Pardon My Take” podcast last October, and the topic of unwritten rules in baseball came up. The Houston Astros star was asked if he has a favorite, and the first thing that came to mind was when hitters get thrown at for doing “stupid stuff.”

“I kind of like the way the game has always policed itself,” Bregman said. “If you do some stupid stuff on the field, either you or one of your teammates is gonna get hit for how you’re acting. I kind of like that. I kind of like those rules.”

While we don’t know what exactly Bregman considers “stupid stuff,” we know there are hundreds of players across Major League Baseball who are furious over the Astros cheating their way to a World Series title in 2017. There has been a lot of talk about Houston hitters being plunked this season as retaliation, so Bregman’s favorite unwritten rule may become an issue for him and his teammates.

The negative commentary about Astros players from their peers has seemingly gotten more aggressive by the day. While MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has said there will be serious consequences for any pitcher who intentionally throws at Houston hitters, we highly doubt that will stop some players from sending a message.
