Watch: Nick Taylor completes stunning comeback to win WM Phoenix Open through playoff round
Rob Schumacher/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

On Sunday, the eyes of the sporting world were mostly glued to the Super Bowl LVIII event in Las Vegas. Despite this huge sporting event, golf attracted a lot viewers at the WM Phoenix Open as Nick Taylor scripted a marvelous comeback.

After shooting a first round score of 60, Taylor found himself in the mix for the title. He eventually found himself tied with Charley Hoffman at the end of 72 holes. This saw the two golfers go into a play-off round where Taylor emerged as the winner.

This victory saw him avenge his performance last year. In a tight contest in 2023, he would finish two strokes behind winner Scottie Scheffler in second place. His putting played an important factor in this triumph. The Canadian golfer birdied the 18th hole three times (once in regulation and twice in play-off) to snatch the title away from Hoffman’s grasp.

This is now his fourth win on the PGA Tour and his first since his historic triumph at the RBC Canadian Open in 2023. Coincidentally, both of his previous two wins have come via playoff rounds.

The finish was pretty dream-like. My setup got much cleaner, my face rotation slowed down, so we've done the same drills for a year, just constantly repeating them over and over again. Nick Taylor on his performance as per USA Today.

2024 WM Phoenix Open prize money payout

The 2024 WM Phoenix Open winner Nick Taylor bagged the top prize of $1.5 million ($1,584,000 to be precise) from the $8.8 million purse. Meanwhile, Charley Hoffman had to settle with a runner-up spot and collected $959,000 for his efforts.

Scottie Scheffler, who entered the tournament as the two-time defending champion finished tied for third with Sam Burns . This saw the duo pick up $519,200 each.

On the other hand, Sahith Theegala once again came up short after a strong start. His final score of 17-under saw him claim the fifth spot and collected $360,000 for his performance.

The event also saw some marquee names fail to live upto the expectations placed on them earlier. Billy Horschel, Zach Johnson, Shane Lowry and two current major champions Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman all finished outside the top 40 standings and received a much less smaller share from the purse.

The cut event saw Nicolo Galletti finish at 73rd position which saw him pick just $17,512. He will have work hard if he wants to enjoy a major share of the prize in his next event.

The golfers will now turn now their to the Genesis Invitational, the second signature event of the year, this week in California. They will also have to look out for Tiger Woods, who confirmed his participation as host in the event.
