This PGA Tour golfer is the early favorite to win FedEx Cup

The FedEx Cup playoffs tee off on Thursday and the competition is tighter than ever with the field for each event being significantly smaller. But that hasn't stopped oddsmakers from trying to foresee who will lift the FedEx Cup trophy this year.

In 2022, Rory McIlroy pulled an upset over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to not just win the PGA Tour's big playoff run, but to also take over as the top-ranked golfer in the world. After a crazy season on and off the course, both golfers are back at TPC Southwind for the first leg of the playoffs: the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Is McIlroy projected to repeat his success or are sportsbooks favoring Scheffler to emerge victorious at the end of August?

In a bit of a twist before the playoffs begin, DraftKings is actually favoring world No. 3 Jon Rahm to win the FedEx Cup at  7-2 odds as of this writing on Wednesday. Scheffler is the next favorite on the list at 9-2, while McIlroy is listed at 11-2.

Rahm's 2023 season got off to a hot start before cooling off a bit following his win at the Masters. He enters the first round at TPC Southwind on an upswing, however, having finished T2 at the Open Championship a few weeks ago.

The odds get a bit longer after that, with both Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay listed at 14-1, followed by Xander Schauffele and Max Homa at 16-1. This year's U.S. Open winner, Wyndham Clark, is next on the list and is currently a 28-1 long shot to win the FedEx Cup.

The 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship tees off on Thursday.
