Maverick McNealy (shoulder) taking break from competition
Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Maverick McNealy is taking a break from active competition to nurse his ailing left shoulder.

McNealy acknowledged that he's been dealing with a torn anterior sternoclavicular ligament in his shoulder since the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February. After missing the cut two weeks ago at the RBC Canadian Open, the 27-year-old took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce his decision to take a break and return to competition "sometime this Fall."

"After a brief period of improvement, it worsened in Canada to the point that I did not think it was a good idea to continue playing (that rough was no joke...)," McNealy wrote.

"We are attacking the problem with physical therapy, biomechanics analysis, golf swing changes and regenerative stem-cell treatments."

McNealy, who is at No. 87 in FedExCup points, recorded six finishes of T-18 or better over his first eight starts. He has missed three cuts over his last four starts.
