Golf best bets: 3 outright bets to target for the Wyndham Championship

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are right around the corner, but the PGA Tour still needs to make one final pit stop at Sedgefield Country Club for this week's Wyndham Championship. Because there are no superstars in the field, this is set up to be a wide-open tournament with Sungjae Im (+1600) and Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) topping the odds board.

But I'm looking past the two favorites for my outright bets this week. Here are the first three clicks I made Monday morning for the Wyndham Championship.

Sam Burns (+2200 BetMGM)

Sam Burns has earned the nickname "Bermuda Burns" because of his prowess as a putter on Bermuda greens. Four of his five PGA Tour wins have come on golf courses with Bermuda greens, including his victory earlier this season at Austin Country Club. Burns has played Sedgefield Country Club once in 2020, and he finished T13 while gaining more than three strokes putting. He's a serious threat to win this year in a weaker field.

J.T. Poston (+3500 DraftKings)

There isn't a hotter club on the PGA Tour than J.T. Poston's putter. Over his last four starts, Poston has gained more than 20 strokes on the greens en route to three top-6 finishes. The American played well enough to win the 3M Open last week, but he finished T2 because Lee Hodges has the best combined approach and putting performance of his life. Poston is a past winner at the Wyndham Championship, and he's playing well enough to notch his second victory at Sedgefield.

Alex Smalley (+5500 DK)

Alex Smalley is playing some of the most consistent golf on the PGA Tour right now, but his odds this week don't reflect that. The 26-year-old has recorded five top-25 finishes (including a T2 at the John Deere Classic) in his last nine starts, and he's gained strokes on approach in eight of those nine. Smalley's lack of distance off the tee makes it challenging for him to compete at the longer venues on Tour, but Sedgefield is more of a positional course that rewards precise iron play. With a T13 and a T29 in two starts at the Wyndham Championship, Smalley's strong course history and stellar recent form make him a perfect outright target this week.
