Earlier this week, the Louisville football program made their return to the practice fields and kicked off their five-week-long spring practice, taking some of their first on-field steps towards preparing for the 2024 season.

While head coach Jeff Brohm is more so known for his offense, the Cardinals' defense is what served as the primary catalyst for their 10-4 campaign last season. Co-defensive coordinator Ron English is looking to sow the seeds early in spring ball so that Louisville will have yet another strong defense in 2024.

"It's good (to be back)," English said. "This is the first year though that I'm just watching a lot because there's a lot of new faces out there, and I'm just trying to make sure that they kind of have an idea of what they're doing. It was a different experience because of the roster turnover, to be honest."

Following a disappointing end of the season for their secondary, the Cardinals added several newcomers through the high school ranks and the transfer portal for that area of the field. Of course, they return plenty of familiar faces as well.

"I think we're meshing great," safety Devin Neal said. "Obviously, we brought in a lot of veteran guys, so I feel like there's great additions to the safety room. A lot of experience, a lot of depth. I like that."

On Thursday, English and Neal took time to meet with the media. They discussed the start of spring practice, the plethora of newcomers in the secondary, and more.
