Tony Cascarino has urged Gareth Southgate to move Declan Rice to CENTRE-BACK in a back four.

In wake of England’s defeat to Italy, and in the context of their recent dismal performances, it’s no surprise that every pundit across the land has an opinion as to how Southgate can turn it around.

Unfortunately, not all opinions are good ones. Even if you don’t think Southgate is the right man to take England forward, just be glad that Tony Cascarino didn’t end up in the managerial hot seat.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cascarino suggested that Southgate moves West Ham captain Declan Rice back to centre-back and pairs him with Manchester City’s John Stones in defence.

“I’ve banged on about this for ages, and I’m going to drive people mad about this – the best way for England to play is a four [at the back].”

“And I really think the best person to play in a four, because he’s quick as well, is Declan Rice at the heart of England’s defence. Absolute centre-half.”

“Playing alongside someone like John Stones, having that pace is going to be really important to England in a back-four. Declan could play that position blindfolded. He’s a natural defender.”

There are a fair few problems in this England side, but Rice in midfield is not one of them. He has been among the better recent performers. Cascarino shouldn’t have publicised this opinion.
