It's official! The beloved Gerry Lopez Big Wave Challenge is on for Saturday, March 23rd at Mt. Bachelor in Oregon.

This is the 12th Big Wave Challenge, a collaboration between Gerry Lopez, renowned big wave surfer, and Mt. Bachelor. The contest is open to the first 300 people to register and celebrates creative, surfy snowboarding on a one-of-a-kind course.

The format is fun and relaxed. The @bigwave_challenge Instagram explained:

"The contest will run in a jam style format, meaning riders can take runs through the course as many times as they can during their divisions allotted time. Pro Surfers drop in whenever there’s a good wave. Judges will score competitors based on overall performance and impression.

Gerry Lopez is not only one of the most renowned surfers of all time, he's also a Mt. Bachelor ambassador--a purveyor of the enjoyment of standing sideways. The official release announcing that the event was on for Saturday explained:

Gerry has called Mt. Bachelor his home mountain since first moving to Bend from Maui in the 90s. He says, "We surf and snowboard because they're fun to do and make us feel good. Oftentimes we get distracted, letting things get in the way of doing the things we love, and lose sight of what's true. When we clear away all 'that other stuff,' what remains is this basic truth. This is what the Mt. Bachelor Big Wave Challenge is about...come join us in having fun and feeling good."

It could not be said any better.

In addition, the Big Wave Challenge champions giving back to the community. The release explained, "The Aloha spirit, stoke, and the desire to raise money for worthy causes has always been the driving belief behind this one-of-a-kind snowboard event." This year's event will raise money for celebrated park builder and member of the community, Pat Malendoski. An auction is being held to raise money and you can participate even if you're not in the PNW.
