Sebastian Vettel Le Mans chances grow after strong test

Sebastian Vettel could return to racing this year, especially following an impressive test with the Porsche 963. After retiring from Formula 1 eighteen months ago, the four-time Champion is again exploring options to compete again. In news that is grabbing the motorsport world’s attention, he is on track to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

With F1’s growth in recent seasons, the activities of drivers leaving the paddock are increasingly observed. Antonio Giovinazzi, for example, claimed victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Ferrari last year. The Italian previously had a brief stint at Formula E.

Mick Schumacher is another driver who made the switch from F1 to WEC, signing a contract with Alpine. The 25-year-old is hopeful that his efforts for the French outfit can catapult him back into Formula 1.

Regardless, suffice it to say that categories like IndyCar, WEC and Formula E are increasingly on the radar of F1 fans. This is for good reason, with each series offering competitive racing throughout the field.

The Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans are the two most iconic races across these categories. As outlined previously, these events have seen growing participation from ex-F1 drivers.

Vettel impressive in Porsche Test

Sebastian Vettel could join this list. He is currently participating in a 36-hour test with Porsche in Spain’s Aragon circuit. Roughly a week ago, the quadruple World Champion also did a test with the hypercar.

According to German outlets AMuS and Motorsport Aktuell, Vettel quickly matched the lap times of factory drivers. His feedback was also noted for its detail, something which the 36-year-old became well-known in Formula 1.

As of yet, there is no official news on Vettel’s participation. However, it is understood that Vettel’s efforts behind the wheel have postponed the original announcement data. Understandably, the prospect of such an iconic driver competing in the 24 hours of Le Mans is an attractive proposition.

The decision to postpone a final decision is a testament to how Vettel’s speed is now firmly a part of the calculations at Porsche. However, time will tell whether the German brand pulls the trigger and adds Vettels to their roster.
