F1 News: Helmut Marko addresses Alex Albon Red Bull rumours

Alex Albon has been linked with a Red Bull move in certain F1 news outlets, but Helmut Marko has downplayed this possibility.

Last year was something of a breakout season for Alex Albon, whose efforts at Williams impressed the entire F1 paddock. The Thai driver almost single-handedly put the British outfit into 7th in the standings, their best result in several seasons.

As a driver whose value continues to rise, he is often linked to a team switch. This is despite his current contract being valid until the end of 2025. James Vowles recently clarified this issue as rumours intensified over winter.

However, despite his existing contract, it is still possible for teams to make offers. As evidenced on numerous occasions in Formula 1, agreements can be changed or altered under the correct circumstances.

With this in mind, Alex Albon is someone frequently mentioned across F1 news platforms. Whilst there is no concrete evidence suggesting his departure from Williams is imminent, his name is understandably mentioned in “silly season” conversations.

One of the teams the 27-year-old is often linked to is Red Bull. However, Red Bull’s Helmut Marko has made clear this speculation is unfounded:

“No teammate can hold a candle to Max, and it can quickly become demoralising,” he told Kleinezeitung. 

“Albon is not an option for us. He has a contract until 2025.”

Albon to evaluate his options

Interestingly, Marko was one of the first people to reveal that Albon’s contract is valid until 2025 – rather than 2024, as some speculated.

Regardless, the senior advisor at the reigning Champion team seems to have ruled out a reunion with his former driver. This seems a logical decision, considering that Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo are two attractive options at his disposal.

Moreover, Liam Lawson is still available on the sidelines, waiting for an opportunity in Formula 1. With this significant depth in the Red Bull roster, going back to a driver who has thrived since departing seems unlikely.

From Albon’s perspective, whilst fighting at the front is perspective, there was always the possibility of facing similar issues in 2020. Although he has undoubtedly improved his driving skills since then, the 27-year-old will surely look for a more comfortable environment moving forward.

Williams currently provides this platform, allowing for his development. The Grove-based team has played a crucial role in his F1 career. Within a space of two years, Albon is now cemented as a well-respected driver on the field.

Should he feel the British squad is not showing enough growth, there will certainly be other options. However, in the meantime, there is no need for Albon to make any hasty decisions.
