David Coulthard urges Williams to ‘keep hold off’ Alex Albon who is reportedly wanted by Red Bull and Mercedes

Alex Albon was the sole factor for Williams‘s success last year, helping the team to a P7 finish in the constructor’s standings. Furthermore, his point-scoring drives have earned him praise around the paddock and have helped him bury his washed-up Red Bull image for good. This has led David Coulthard to advise the English team to keep hold of their Thai-Birtish driver.

Alex Albon stayed on the bench for the 2021 season after Red Bull sacked him for Sergio Perez. However, since returning to the paddock in a full-time seat, Albon showcased his skills in the subpar Williams FW45 and brought crucial points to the team. This has now got the 28-year-old in prime position for a move to Mercedes or Red Bull for 2025.

David Coulthard wants Williams to keep hold of their star driver with everything that they have got.

They've got some good technical team that have joined. Pat Fry, for instance, who I worked with at McLaren, very experienced. He's been at Ferrari, Benetton back in the day and I have no doubt that he will bring a steadying hand. I think it's just [a] lack of investment for several years and the new owners, of course, have been trying to restructure. I just hope they do enough to be able to keep a hold of someone like Alex Albon, who has clearly been the stand-out driver there. David Coulthard said in the Formula for Success podcast

Coulthard explained that the English team has recruited several key figures from other teams like Pat Fry. Moreover, the team is in a restructuring process and thus, should have a lead driver to give the team direction. This is one of the main reasons why Albon is a key figure at Williams.

Alex Albon was ‘frustrated’ at the end of the Australian GP

Williams started the season with a logistics nightmare and barely managed to ready two chassis for the opening rounds. The team was left in a dilemma when Albon totaled his car in FP1 in Australia. Subsequently, the team gave him Logan Sargeant‘s chassis to continue the weekend while sidelining the American.

The Thai-British driver was frustrated with the result as he came close to scoring a point.

By the end of the race, the last 10 laps, it paid our price and we dropped back. [It was] frustrating, [I] just struggled with the tyres and graining and couldn’t drive as quickly as other people without graining the tyres. Alex Albon said in the post-race interview with F1

The former podium sitter explained that he was on course to score a point at Albert Park. However, Williams’s strategy calls were quite skeptical which trickled him down the field.

Albon paid the price at Albert Park for betting on an undercut at the Australian GP. However, with three races done and dusted, the focus will now shift toward next week’s three-day carnival at the Suzuka International Racing Circuit. Williams will eye a strong outing.
