David Coulthard claims ‘dejected’ Lewis Hamilton has given up on Mercedes and is looking forward to race with Ferrari

Mercedes’ 2024 campaign has been somewhat similar to the team’s results in 2023. The crew was excited to get their hands on the W15 challenger and potentially score great results down the season. However, the W15 challenger produced a mediocre pace which made the team occupy the fourth spot in the constructors’ championship. Ex-Red Bull driver David Coulthard has commented on the team’s performance and how it’s affecting Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton will be moving over to Ferrari in the 2025 season. David Coulthard pointed to how the Briton hasn’t ‘settled’ with his car yet. While George Russell is honing the lap time, the 39-year-old is on the back foot according to the Englishman. Coulthard asserted due to the poor performance of the cars, Hamilton is ‘mentally’ present at Maranello and is less concerned about his final season with Mercedes.

[Hamilton] has just not been settled with this car and you can tell. George is just honing the lap time right now and you can feel that Lewis is on the back foot. What we do know though, if he does find a window of performance, then you know he will deliver...But right now, it's looking like his decision to head off to Ferrari, mentally, he is already there. Coulthard said, as reported by mirror.co.uk.

Eddie Jordan agreed with Lewis Hamilton’s waning interest in Mercedes

David Coulthard’s friend and Ex-F1 team owner resonated with what ex-racer had to say about Hamilton. Jordan highlighted that the seven-time world champion was ‘dejected’ with the current state of Mercedes. Additionally, the Irish businessmen highlighted that the team was the same as last year and mentioned how the season started poorly.

Lewis, I think, is a bit dejected already with the state of Mercedes. Mercedes and Toto [Wolff], it's the same as last year, isn't it? It's started poorly. It's very hard to catch up. Jordan said on Formula For Success podcast (H&T: mirror.co.uk).

Apart from this, Jordan questioned Mercedes’ chances to compete against other teams on the grid. Meanwhile, the 75-year-old highlighted that apart from Ferrari, no other team on the grid could seriously contend for the championship against Red Bull.

How is Mercedes going to compete? The problem for all the other competitors is that other than Ferrari, I cannot see anyone making a serious challenge to this Red Bull team.

As a result, Lewis Hamilton would need to push extra hard just to gain some points from the challenger. If things like the same, the seven-time world champion wouldn’t even be able to contend for the world championship. Hence, Brackley needs to desperately work on their form and score a comfortable finish for the 2024 season.
