Andretti’s biggest backers insist the team can ‘field a competitive entry’ despite FOM rejecting their proposal
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

American motorsports tycoon Michael Andretti has been eyeing an entry into the elite class of racing–Formula 1–for quite sometime now. Michael and his father Mario, who is a Formula 1 World Champion himself, make up a formidable father-son duo who have invested millions into their ambitious project for Andretti Motorsports to become the new entrant in F1. However, their proposal has been outright rejected by the Formula One Management despite getting a green signal from the FIA.

Introducing an F1 team requires vast research and development and that needs an injection of huge funds. That is why Andretti Motorsports had onboarded General Motors as their engine supplier in early 2023. But once the team seemed all-set with a go-ahead from the FIA to help their quest for a seat as the 11th team in F1, GM applied to become partners with Andretti Motorsports from 2028 onwards. And this led to the naming of the potential Formula 1 team as Andretti-Cadillac.

But now that Andretti-Cadillac’s proposal to enter into F1 has been rejected, the funds that they have put into their dream project are all but wasted. Still, General Motors insist that they are sure Andretti Motorsports will find a way into F1 in the future as their planned car model is quite competent.

We do believe between Andretti and Cadillac that we have got the capability of fielding a competitive entry. Obviously, (Formula One Management) made their statement, and we have asked for a follow up meeting with FOM and so we will work through that. A spokesperson for General Motors claimed, as reported by The Associated Press.

GM Vice President has revealed Andretti-Cadillac is continuing building their car

The entire 2023 season of Formula 1 has been a busy time for Andretti and their partner Cadillac since the two organizations have been immersed in developing the perfect racecar to introduce their new team into the pinnacle of motorsports. However, all those works had presumably stopped when the FOM refused to accept the team’s proposal to enter as the 11th squad of F1.

But now, proving the presumptions wrong, the Vice President of General Motors/Cadillac, Jim Campbell, has revealed their team is continuing with the works of developing an F1-worthy car despite the rejection of their application by the Formula One Management.

Our joint teams are continuing to develop our car at pace. So, that is where we are at.

In other news, there has been a surprising claim from Andretti-Cadillac’s side as the team said they were not aware of a meeting that the FOM wanted to have with them. Apparently, the email stating the details of the meeting had gone into their spam box and thus, the Formula One Management did not get to have a meeting with the team’s stakeholders and this might have finally led to their proposal to enter F1 being rejected.
