All good things must come to an end, including 2019, which was a great year for music. Fans saw the worlds of hip-hop and country collide, a reunion between one of the biggest boy bands and an R&B queen turning a nearly 40-year-old classic song into a viral bop. A number of artists experimented with different sounds and showcased their unique styles to be on the brink of nabbing their first Grammy Awards. Some proved to have a big year being named as artists to watch, while veteran stars showcased their dominance in the industry. As the decade comes to a close, here are some of the top songs that kept fans moving through 2019.
The young artist who changed the face of country music in 2019, Lil Nas X saw his star rise when Billboard removed his song "Old Town Road" from its country charts claiming that the song wasn't "country enough." The backlash that Billboard received helped music fans discover Lil Nas X, and country star Billy Ray Cyrus decided to hop on the song's remix. Months later, Lil Nas X was on the cover of a Billboard magazine and earned a few Grammy nominations. If any artist won this year, it was Lil Nas X!
Pop's newest sensation, Billie Eilish, is winning hearts everywhere. Her debut album, "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?," garnered a few hit singles, including her smash "Bad Guy." The catchy single helped earn Eilish her first Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
Lizzo may have released her third album this year, but it has been her most successful one to date. Whether she's seen twerking on social media or slaying the flute on stage, she's the epitome of an artist who's not afraid to be herself. Her hit single "Juice" is reminiscent of a throwback '80s pop jam inspired by the funk era.
Anything the queen Beyoncé touches is gold, and that includes covers of classic songs. When she released her 2019 film, "Homecoming," on Netflix, she also gifted fans with a live album that featured songs from her Coachella set. One of the bonus tracks was her cover to the classic Maze and Frankie Beverly hit, "Before I Let Go." Beyoncé even launched the #BeforeILetGoChallenge on her Instagram account, in which she showcased fans creating their own dance routines to the song.
Throughout her career, Ariana Grande has known how to make an anthem that could be heard anywhere. Her single "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" is the final single from her fifth album, "Thank U, Next." The song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
One of the most dominant names to hit the hip-hop scene this year is DaBaby. In addition to being featured on tracks by other artists like Post Malone and Lil Nas X, he released two solo albums. His second album, "KIRK," featured the fan favorite single "BOP." Besides the infectious lyrics, the song's video showcases DaBaby in his dance element and featured the dance crew Jabbawockeez.
After coming onto the scene back in 2017, Khalid had to make sure that his follow-up album was also a smash. His sophomore album, "Free Spirit," featured the hit single "Talk," a track that became his highest-charting song to date. Produced by electronic duo Disclosure, "Talk" peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
When rapper Nipsey Hussle tragically lost his life earlier this year, there were a few artists who mentioned they worked on music before his passing, and one of them was DJ Khaled. The producer teamed up with Nipsey and singer John Legend for the inspirational track "Higher." The gospel-centered song became a top-10 single and earned a 2020 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap/Sung Performance.
It's hard to believe Selena Gomez's previous album was released nearly five years ago. Well, the pop princess is gearing up for her third solo album, "Rare," due out in 2020. The album's lead single, "Lose You to Love Me," has Gomez finding her true identity and believing in self-love before being with someone else. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Ari Lennox, aka the first lady of J. Cole's Dreamville label, is all about bringing soul back to R&B. "BMO" was the fourth single released from her debut album, "Shea Butter Baby." The song showcases Lennox's impressive tone that is reminiscent of the likes of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.
Rosalía may have been known for her flamenco music style, but her pop star status has risen thanks to collaborations with artists like J Balvin. The two teamed up on the single "Con Altura" earlier this year, with elements of Rosalía's flamenco roots and heavy on the reggaeton vibe for Balvin fans. In October, the video reached 1 billion views on YouTube.
Tyler, the Creator took 2019 to another level with his fifth album, "IGOR." The lead single, "EARFQUAKE," featuring Playboi Carti and vocals from veteran singer Charlie Wilson, became Tyler's highest-charting single to date. In addition to Tyler's striking look in the video, along with a cameo by actress Tracee Ellis Ross, the song helped him to earn a 2020 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album.
R&B's newest sensation, Summer Walker, is ready to put her mark on the industry with her debut album, "Over It." One of the its standout tracks is "Come Thru," a song that not only features R&B veteran Usher but also samples his hit song "You Make Me Wanna." Produced by London On Da Track, "Come Thru" is the perfect jam for fans who miss '90s R&B.
Two singers dating who make sweet collaborations together is exactly what Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello proved to everyone this year. Their latin-pop single "Señorita" had fans falling in love with their romance, and it became a No. 1 single on the Billboard charts.
Ed Sheeran is known for taking a bit of time between each album release. His fourth album, "No. 6 Collaborations Project," was jam-packed with features from artists such as Cardi B, Bruno Mars, Travis Scott and Eminem. However it was Sheeran's first single, "I Don't Care," with Justin Bieber that became a top-three hit, and this is the fourth time the two singers have collaborated.
J. Cole may be known for going platinum without any features, but he also knows how to market his music properly upon release. He promoted the single "Middle Child" by posting famous middle children on his social media pages, including Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Michael Jordan. Although Cole is not a middle child himself, the track emphasizes his place in the industry: between the veteran rappers and the up-and-comers.
Besides being in the news for fighting for the rights of her music, Taylor Swift released her seventh album, "Lover." She teamed up with Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie on the album's leading single, "Me!." The pop song is a track that can easily get stuck in the heads of music lovers, and it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
There was a time when fans of the Jonas Brothers didn't believe the band would get back together but surprised everyone by reuniting this year. "Sucker" was released six years after the band's split and became its first No. 1 Billboard hit. Perhaps the hiatus was a great band decision.
One of the most dominant names across the worlds of Afrobeats and Afrofusion is Nigerian artist Burna Boy. His fourth album, "African Giant," garnered a few singles including the hit "Anybody." Burna released the track in June, and it's a song that feels exactly like summer —breezy, vibrant, and dance-heavy to get listeners moving.
One of the most watched artists of the year is Megan Thee Stallion. The rapper's catchphrase, "hot girl summer," became a viral hit across social media, and she decided to turn it into a song. Megan turned up the heat, as she teamed up with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign on the sizzling anthem.
2020 is approaching, and Halsey is readying her third album, "Manic." The album's second single, "Graveyard," is a pop jam that expresses how toxic, addicting and dangerous love can be at times.
Luke Combs is a rising star in the country world. His sophomore album, "What You See Is What You Get," reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country Album chart, part of which is due to his hit single "Beer Never Broke My Heart." Combs stresses how so many things can turn one's life upside down, but a nice cold beer has never let him down.
Due to their professional and personal relationships, many fans didn't think Chris Brown and Drake would come together on a song. However, they shocked everyone on their hit song "No Guidance," one of the singles from Brown's album "Indigo." In addition to the infectious production and shared vocals between the two singers, the video showcases Drake's acting skills, as he tries to challenge Brown to a dance battle.
Just two years after his solo debut album, Harry Styles followed up with the lead single, "Lights Up," for his sophomore album, "Fine Line." The single is a psychedelic and breezy pop tune that focuses on finding one's true self and stepping into one's own.
