John David Washington recounts meeting Morgan Freeman: 'I just lost it'

One may assume that having Denzel Washington for a father would absolve John David Washington's ability to get starstruck.

Enter: Morgan Freeman.

For Rolling Stone's "The First Time" video series, the 36-year-old recounted meeting Freeman:

"The first time I was starstruck is when I met Morgan Freeman because I watched the movie Glory, just, 1,000 times-plus, and I had every line memorized. I knew every character, all the backstories. I knew the war sequences. I knew everything. The way he was in that movie, he had this very father-figure-like energy to him and characteristic, so when I got to meet him finally, I just lost it. I wanted him to say his lines. I asked him for his autograph. I didn't get the autograph, though."

Glory came out in 1989, and Denzel Washington won an Oscar for his role as Private Trip.

The younger Washington is the man of the moment in Hollywood after high-profile roles in BlacKkKlansman (2018), Ballers (2015-19), Tenet (2020) and Malcolm & Marie (2021). The former football player is the cover star for Rolling Stone's April issue.

Washington is simultaneously covering W Magazine with Malcolm & Marie co-star Zendaya:

In the above "First Time" video, Washington reminisced on his first times being recognized for his own work, scoring a touchdown, experiencing New York City, stepping onto a movie set and reading Christopher Nolan's Tenet script.
