Joaquin Phoenix teaming with Midsommar director on next film

Ari Aster and A24 are back together again—and this time, Joaquin Phoenix is along for the ride.

According to Deadline's Justin Kroll, A24 agreed to finance and produce a forthcoming feature-length film from Aster titled Disappointment Blvd. after Phoenix signed on to star. A24 previously produced Aster-directed Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019). "Details are being kept under wraps for the project written and directed by Aster, but the plot is described as 'an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time,'" Kroll wrote.

Of course, Phoenix is considered one of the most successful actors of all time. The 46-year-old followed his late brother, River, into the industry and has credits to his name dating back to 1982, when he was just eight years old. From 1989's Ron Howard-directed and Steve Martin-led Parenthood to 2000's Gladiator, embodying late country music legend Johnny Cash in 2005 biopic Walk the Line or any number of other roles, Phoenix steadily and undeniably rose to mainstream fame. He finally earned recognition from the Academy with an Oscar (best performance by an actor in a leading role) for his work as the sinister titular character of 2019's Joker.

Reports and rumors have been swirling since November 2019 about the possibility of Phoenix reprising his Joker role of Arthur Fleck in a sequel.

In the meantime, Phoenix will serve as Aster's most impressive leading man yet.
