Disney reportedly committed to making 'Jungle Cruise' sequel

It took 15 years of development for "Jungle Cruise" to arrive, but according to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, it has taken just one month since the movie's July 30 theatrical release for Disney to be "pulling the trigger on a sequel."

"Stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are set to return as wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton, respectively, for the brand new adventure with Michael Green, who co-wrote the hit, back at the keyboard," THR's Borys Kit added. "Expected to also come back are director Jaume Collet-Serra and the film's producing team of John Davis, John Fox, Beau Flynn, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Scott Sheldon returns as executive producer."

"Jungle Cruise" is based upon the Disneyland theme park ride of the same name, which opened in 1955. In live-action film adaptation, Dr. Lily Houghton needs riverboat captain Wolff and his boat to ride down the Amazon and find "The Tears of the Moon" for its healing powers.

Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons and Paul Giamatti rounded out the cast.

Opening weekend numbers for "Jungle Cruise) were impressive (h/t Deadline): $34.2 million at the domestic box office, over $30 million on Disney Plus and $27.6 million at overseas box offices. Overall, per Box Office Mojo, the action-adventure comedy has grossed just over $100 million domestically and just shy of $187 million globally.
